Remove plaque & tarter for a clean and healthy smile!
Scale and Polish also known as teeth cleaning is a regular dental treatment that helps to keep your teeth clean. No matter how well you brush and floss, even after every meal, there are always hard-to-reach areas where plaque and tartar can build up. Removing plaque and tartar build up on your teeth is a must but it cannot be easily removed by brushing with a regular toothbrush and if remained intact will cause gum disease and tooth decay.
To protect your teeth from the risk of gum disease, your dentist will highly recommend a regular check-up with a scale and polish to cleanyour teeth properly cleaned.
This treatment includes a consultation, cleaning and polish, and a topical fluoride treatment which is done at the same visit. The fee also includes sterilisation and disposable cost. Treatment will begin with a consultation, our expert dentist will thoroughly examine your teeth at first. Then the cleaning routine starts which usually involves two procedures namely dental scaling and polishing. You can look forward to a healthy and clean smile!
Consultation: Before any treatment, once you visit the dentist, a thorough examination and diagnosis will be performed at our clinic. The clinician will check the condition of your teeth (extent of any tooth damage, cavities (even hidden cavities under the gum line), infections, gum disease, etc.) and also will advise you on any treatment if required.
Scale and Polish:
Scaling: Our teeth are vulnerable to bacteria due to the food and drinks we consume. These bacteria get accumulated in our teeth and become dental plaque and over time, a tough, crusty deposit called calculus or tartar gets formed. Even though plaque can be removed with regular brushing and flossing, tarter cannot be removed. The process of removing the tartar is called scaling which is done by a dentist using a tool with ultrasonic vibration that knocks down the stubborn tartar.
Polishing: This is to remove plaque and stains on your teeth and make the surface smoother so that dirt will not get attached easily. It is done using a rotating polishing cup/brush (similar to an electric toothbrush). This will improve the appearance of your teeth and remove bacteria and external stains.
It is best to be realistic that polishing doesn’t whiten the teeth it only removes external stains. For whiter and brighter teeth you can check the Clean and Brighten treatment (A combined option of polish, scale and whiten) or advanced teeth whitening treatments like comprehensive in-clinic teeth whitening or Philips Zoom in-office teeth whitening options. r improve the colour of your teeth, or remove tougher stains.
Yes! Even if you brush there are hard-to-reach areas where plaque can build up. Once the plaque is turned into hardened tartar, it is not possible to remove it by brushing and scaling is required.
Dental plaque and calculus (commonly known as tartar) if not removed can even lead to the loss of your tooth. If not scaled and polished regularly, bacteria will build up and inflame the gums. (Initial stage of gum inflammation is called Gingivitis). If this is not treated it will lead to gum disease and finally, the tooth structure will be affected. Therefore, a scale polish not only cleans your teeth but also reduces the risk of gum disease and saves your teeth in the long run.
A visit twice a year (every six months) is the general rule of thumb unless advised by the dentist. How regularly you should scale and polish depends on your lifestyle habits and health. Some may require more frequent professional cleaning than others due to smoking, tea/coffee/wine staining, bad breath, a history of gum disease/decay, rapid plaque build-up, and bad oral hygiene.
Most people find it painless. A crapping sensation can be felt while scaling which causes little to no pain. If you have stubborn and deep tartar, sore gums or exposed sensitive surfaces of the teeth may result in some pain but most of the time is very much bearable; if not the dentist will provide local anaesthetic only if required.
Yes, absolutely. professional scale and polish in children are as important for them as they are for adults to remove tartar and maintain good oral health. Matter of fact it is also a good way to get the children settled and familiar with the dental environment.
Scaling and polishing can remove surface stains (ones that cause by coloured food and beverages or smoking) It will help to make your teeth look cleaner and brighter, but it will not improve the colour shade of your tooth. This can be done by teeth whitening treatments where your teeth are bleached to bring a whiter shade. You can learn more about your teeth whitening options here.
