Dental Extractions

(Tooth Extraction)

Tooth extraction is necessary when a tooth is damaged beyond repair or when overcrowding affects dental health. Our experienced team provides safe and effective tooth extractions to improve oral health and prevent future complications.

What to do if I need tooth extraction?

At DentalPlus, our dentists can provide treatment for every type of extraction. Whether you need a a simple plucking of teeth or a surgical extractions, we can help. After diagnosing your teeth, the dentist will be able to tell you all of the available options, alleviate any pain if necessary, and provide you with the treatment that you need.

Will the tooth extraction be painful?

An injection (local anaesthetic) will be given to numb the tooth prior to the extraction. Numbing cream is also applied to the injection site to minimise the discomfort felt during the injection. Before commencing the actual tooth extraction, the dentist will ensure that the tooth is completely numb. Tooth extractions are typically painless. However, you will experience some firm and control pressure as the dentist gently loosens the tooth from its socket.

Some soreness may be experienced after the extraction but you can follow the instructions below to aid in the healing process.

Tooth Extraction Procedure in Singapore

1. Consultation

Our dentist will take an X-ray of the patient’s tooth to evaluate the curvature and angle of the tooth’s root.

dental injection

2. Extraction

Application of local anesthetic to numb the area, then the surgeon will begin the extraction. The tooth may be removed in several pieces.

3. Post-extraction

The wound will be stitched up and a thick layer of gauze will be placed over the extracted area. The patient should bite on the gauze to absorb the blood and start the clotting process.

Is a lot of strength required for tooth extraction?

In a simple extraction, the dentist will grasp the tooth with forceps, and try to loosen it by moving the forceps back and forth. Generally, if the correct technique is employed, minimal strength is required. On the contrary, if too much force is exerted, the chances of tooth breakage are high. Do not worry as you will be given an injection (local anaesthetic) to numb up the tooth so you will just experience some pressure being exerted.

Controlling pain

The numbness from the local anaesthetic should wear off after a few hours. Please contact us if the numbness persists. We will also prescribe painkillers and anti-inflammation medication after the procedure.

Controlling swelling

Don’t worry, this is completely normal. Patients may experience mild facial swelling in the area of the extraction. To reduce the swelling, applying ice to the face may help.

Changing dental gauze

After the extraction, the gauze must remain in place for at least 20–30 minutes in order to exert pressure on the wound and stop bleeding. You should replace the gauze whenever it becomes soaked with blood. The bleeding will likely last for 1–2 hours after the extraction.

Avoiding agitating the extraction area

To ensure that the wound heals properly, pay careful attention to avoid agitating the wound by sucking or touching the extraction area with your tongue, using a straw, eating solid (especially crunchy) food, and drinking alcoholic beverages or using mouthwash containing alcohol. Patients are also advised against rinsing their mouths vigorously or smoking.

Eating

Remember to drink plenty of fluids and consume soft foods. We recommend chewing on the side opposite from the extraction site until the wound has fully healed.

Oral hygiene

Continue to brush and floss as per normal, but be careful not to agitate the extraction area. Following the surgery, we recommend rinsing with warm salt water (half a teaspoon of salt and 1 cup of water) every few hours.
